esd standards
There are several industrial standards defining robustness against electrostatic discharges. The most important and well known is the IEC61000-4-2 standard, which defines a measurement setup that simulates everyday ESD strikes very well. This standard defines four levels of ESD robustness, from 2kV up to 8kV, that an ESD protection device has to be capable of withstanding. In the standard IEC61000-4-5, the voltage pulse has a rise time of 8µs and fall time of 20µs defined. With the help of this defined pulse, the capability of withstanding current and power surges is defined. For both of these standards, the whole system is tested, which at least consists of the protection device and the circuit to be protected circuit. The MIL-883E standard, on the other hand, only tests the ESD robustness of the device itself. The “machine model” and the “charged device model” are not commonly used.
