There are several technologies for protection against ESD strikes. Two prominent ones are silicon based ESD diodes and ceramic based Varistors. Due to the high cost of wafer production and of the raw materials, silicon based ESD protection can usually not reach the price range of varistors. However, they offer much better performance than varistors and guarantee a much better protection along with being able to save in total system cost.
