Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is a phenomena of nature which is best known in the form of a lightning strike in a thunderstorm. Although much less impressive, the zap or ESD strike everyone experiences from time to time when touching a door handle or getting into a car is the very same phenomena. At both events, an electric charge is suddenly transferred from one object or person to another. A sudden electric charge transfer can only occur if the electrical connection has been separated before the event. In a thunderstorm, this happens by the friction between air masses in the storm, but the charge separation can as well be generated by the friction between a carpet and someone's shoes when walking on it.
