As mentioned earlier, the clamping voltage is one of the most important parameters of protection devices since it is a direct measure of the degree of protection for the integrated circuit. In these graphs, the clamping voltage per peak pulse current for an 8 to 20µs pulse is shown for a varistor, on the left, and a Nexperia protection diode, on the right. The clamping voltage for the varistor is clearly higher than for the Nexperia device, therefore increasing the chance of failure for the integrated circuit.
