Connectivity in Control Systems Slide 24

Shown on this slide is an alternative energy solution. The Concerto devices have the floating point core to do control. In wind energy, it is necessary to consider details such as controlling the blade pitch and regenerative braking. There are safety critical requirements for controlling the blades and controlling the actual hub of the system. In the system there is also the requirement to do an AC/DC conversion; the generator is an AC source, and it needed to be converted to DC. Many of the wind farms do a DC boost, and transmit DC down long paths by sending the DC to a concentrator. This would be a typical application of a backyard turbine where there is not a network of turbines, with AC/DC conversion and then the DC long haul, and finally the DC/AC conversion, or inverter conversion, on the other end. The block diagram shows an external interface, but this can be done internal to the device. In this type of system, either a DC or AC system, power line communication will work since it is possible to run power line communications on a DC cable. It is tricky, and not easy to do, but there are ways to get around it. The PLC can be driven so that if there are multiple turbines in a farm, the turbines can all communicate with one another or with a concentrator or external controller. If there is a fault condition, it can be sent to a human, or to a remote computer system.
