QuickSense C8051F990 Low Power MCU with Capacitive Sensing Slide 22
The capacitance to digital converter is capable of connecting multiple channels together internally, thus combining all of the capacitance into a single mux input. For example, consider a keypad with twelve keys and the necessity to wake the MCU from a low power mode if any of the keys are pressed. The traditional method would require sampling all of the individual channels and comparing the thresholds to detect a change. This would require twelve conversions along with the associated CPU overhead to compute the results for each key. By connecting all of the pads together, the module can measure capacitance changes across any of the selected pads in a single conversion. Enabling this feature reduces power several ways. First, power is reduced since only a single measurement is taken and the required CPU computations are performed once. Next, the MCU can remain in the low power sleep mode for longer periods of time. Overall, the average power is reduced.
