The internal schematic block diagram and pin out of the Gen 2 devices illustrates how ST has grouped the pins by functionality to simplify PCB layout. The NTC thermistor is now located on the power side of the IPM, closer to the IGBTs and FWDs to get closer to an actual die temperature representation. This cannot realistically represent instantaneous die temperature, only average die temperature for the module, detecting relatively slow changing thermal overload conditions. The SLLIMM Gen 2 package pin out closely matches popular competitors’ offerings, but with the option of adding two pins for an NTC thermistor for temperature sensing. ST also offers an advanced bi-directional smart shutdown feature in place of their less sophisticated shutdown pin.
