Brushless DC motors are becoming very popular in many applications and industries. These motors do not use the physical contact of brushes on the rotating commutator to power the motor so brushless DC motors can operate at higher efficiency, and provide more torque per watt from the motor. Therefore a smaller brushless DC motor can do the same work as a larger motor burdened with the inefficiencies of brush contacts. Another benefit of the brushless DC motor is that the motor can be completely enclosed and sealed for applications in pumps for fuel, water, and other liquids plus other applications where the environment may be a problem to reliable motor operation. Mechatronic applications where a motor with the motor controller for remote or distributed mechanical operations are co-located within a larger system is another key capability of brushless DC motors. Such applications can include in- or on-transmission park control, in-tank fuel pumps, and distributed or remote robotic movement. Since brushless DC motors are contactless, the magnetic field polarity changes and timing are controlled externally and require a more complicated control interface to control torque, and speed, and ensure safe operation in every load condition. ST has dedicated controllers that include 3-phase brushless DC motor control with serial system interfaces and integrated power supply for distributed architectures. These sophisticated controllers offload the microcontroller hardware and software overhead burden associated with brushless DC motor control.
