This presentation will begin with an overview of motor applications and how they are used in systems today. There has been a significant increase in the number of DC motor applications in automotive and other portable electronic applications. With the advent of advanced processing architectures and more portable battery powered electronic systems, DC motor control offers improved efficiency, reliability, protection and diagnostics, along with reduced system costs. New environmental regulations are also in place that require a look at the higher efficiencies DC motors can bring to control architectures. Motor technology itself has evolved significantly over recent decades and the product and control strategies that are associated with those new DC motors has also evolved with it. STMicroelectronics has many families of products that enable DC motor control to the highest level of efficiency, usefulness, and safety. These products and technology are automotive-based and developed with automotive applications in mind, but there are many applications outside the automotive and transportation industries that would benefit from the protection, diagnostics, quality, and reliability offered by these products.
