Motor Control with Automotive Smart Power Slide 19

The L99MD01 is an octal half-bridge driver capable of driving several DC and/or stepper motors simultaneously and/or sequentially to 0.8 A per channel max. With the internal boost converter it’s possible to drive up to four unipolar or bipolar stepper motors simultaneously, or without the boost converter to run up to three stepper motors sequentially or two stepper motors simultaneously. The octal half-bridge configuration also will drive up to four DC motors simultaneously or seven DC motors sequentially. The integrated 24-bit serial peripheral interface (SPI) controls all outputs and provides diagnostic information including normal operation, open load in on-state, overcurrent, over-temperature warning prior to over-temperature, and over-temperature. This part is fully controlled from 5 V and 3.3 V VCC. Outputs will switch up to 40 V max (28 V full spec) and are configured with two VS supply pins per channel to allow unipolar stepper motor control with three wires per motor. Normally, with only a single supply, unipolar stepper motors require five wires per motor, so the L99MD01 offers system savings through higher levels of integration. This device was developed to support the multichannel flap control requirements of modern automotive HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) systems, but is applicable wherever multichannel low current motors are needed.
