The efficiency of an amplifier limits the amount of total power output that is available to drive the speaker or load. A more efficient amplifier runs much cooler, and sometimes does not need a large heatsink or fan for cooling. This slide provides a quick illustration of the wasted power that shows up as heat in the audio amplifier. The gray area is the unproductive power dissipated as heat.
