Powering FPGAs Slide 22
In summary, because of the increasing complexity of FPGAs, power supply requirements for them have also become more complex. The low noise and high accuracy of LDOs makes them ideal for FPGA applications, but as a rule of thumb, do not exceed 1W of power dissipation. If an application requires more than 1W power, Texas Instruments recommends the use of a switching regulator.  To maximize efficiency and minimize voltage ripple, the WEBENCH tool is also available.
