Powering FPGAs Slide 21
The LM2747 design shown here illustrates some aspects of what was just covered. In the upper right corner of this slide is the circuit’s load transient response. The peak-to-peak voltage excursion is 40mV with a 45 to 100% load step. The tradeoff is the 1MHz switching frequency used to accomplish this transient performance reduces efficiency to a peak of 81%, whereas the IC is otherwise capable of delivering efficiencies in excess of 90%. The scope image on the lower right shows a ripple voltage of just a few millivolts. This is partly accomplished by the use of parallel ceramic capacitors on the output. Details are available in AN1603 found at the hyperlink location on the slide.
