Helical monopole antennas allow the radiator to be physically shorter than a standard monopole, however there are some trade-offs such as reduced impedance bandwidth, greater sensitivity to impedance matching, reduced radiator efficiency and PCB placement limitations due to ground plane dependence. Helical monopoles are very sensitive to dielectric loading effects, such as the hand and surrounding mechanics, therefore they are ideally suited for non-handheld applications. These antennas are most ideally suited to be positioned in the PCB corner locations. Helical monopoles operate similar to a standard monopole, producing somewhat dipolar radiation patterns; they do not operate like an axial or broadside radiator.
