Design-in is relatively straight forward with ceramic monopoles, which are the easiest embedded antenna to integrate. Impedance matching is accomplished with a series/shunt component. The efficiency depends on the fundamental frequency and PC board dimensions, although there are PCB placement limitations due to ground plane dependence. Ceramic monopole antennas are suitable for most hand-held devices. They require larger ground clearance areas surrounding the antenna for radiation efficiency and are ideally suited PCB corner and edge locations, but must be tuned to surrounding mechanics. Ceramic monopoles operate similar to a standard monopole, producing dipolar radiation patterns.
