There are a some key points to consider when selecting the appropriate antenna for a device and/or application. The first question is; when in use, is the device handheld or must it work as a stand-alone unit? The next point should be where on the PC board the antenna should be located and if this is a fixed location. Another important consideration is whether there are any major components on the board or in the device, such as an LCD or a display, that may affect the antenna performance. The intended application, placement on board, board size, and circuit topology (to include the display) are all considerations that should direct the designer towards a specific antenna solution.
