Electrically the W3009 is similar to the counterpart ground clearance (GC) type W3010 antenna. Due to surface currents which have a more direct path to flow along PCB edge, GC area dimension use in-frequency tuning which results in bandwidth (BW) control not being as effective as that found with standard GC designs. The on ground (OG) design requires a taller antenna to achieve adequate radiation, and board top surface ground removal is used to keep some level of tunability. This also increases antenna effective height by a factor of the PCB thickness.
