While the Ground Clearance (GC) area is important for driving and controlling center frequency performance, the GC-area does not need to be square shaped. The square shape is presented in Pulse Electronics, a YAGEO Company's application notes as a standard starting point for the layout work. Arbitrary form GC areas can be used as long as total area and current return path distance is optimized to give the correct resonant frequency and bandwidth.
