When the FT800 is active, it continually sends LCD pixel data. The timing of this data is different for each LCD panel. However, most displays operate in the same fashion. The specified size of a screen, for example 480 x 272 pixels, is the Active Display Region. This would mean that there are 272 lines of data, each consisting of 480 data points. In addition to the active region, there are horizontal and vertical “blanking” timing specifications. Refer to the LCD datasheet for the timing specifications for the beginning and end of the horizontal and vertical synchronization pulses as well as the offset from the beginning of each line or frame to start the active region. The blanking areas are more of a carry-over from the older analog displays which sent electron beams to phosphors on a vacuum tube. The circuitry needed time to reset the beam for each line horizontally and each frame vertically. LCDs continue to use this timing, allowing other operations such as eliminating noise from touch screen events.
