Simply put, the “human interface” is the means of interaction between a device and the end user.  In the past, most inexpensive devices could only provide a simple numeric or text interface, some LEDs, and a few switches or buttons. Thermostats, medical devices, alarm panels, and plenty of other devices fit into this category.
