WiFi Modules Overview Slide 19

As of Q3 of 2015 ST has rolled out version 3.4 of the firmware. 3.4 gave users one of the critical features that the IoT market required, which was full end-to-end security for cloud services. With this version ST has added SSL 3.0 and up to TLS 1.2 capability for cloud providers. Some of the other features that are available are configuration over UART or over the air. In station mode, relative to mini-access-point mode, there are different levels of security. Station mode has up to WPA2-PSK personal. When it is in mini-access-point mode, due to resources available on the microcontroller, ST is only able to do up to WEP security on the mini-access-point mode. Typically the module runs more in station mode than it does in mini-access-point mode. It's an IPv4 based stack. It has both integrated client and server DHCP, it has integrated DNS for client and server. Again, designers can use software updates over the UART for all of the modules. Over-the-air updates are available for the .11 module with the extra 1 MB of flash. It can support up to eight contemporary socket clients and one socket server. It can do those simultaneously in both mini-access-point mode and in client mode. There are remote commands in the AT command set. It has built-in web server, web client, and REST APIs for cloud communication. In station mode and mini-access-point mode it does support IBSS mode for those who are looking for that and all of the power modes including active, standby, sleep, and power save.
