Smart Grid Solutions: Smart Grid Distribution/Smart Meters Slide 39

Shown on this slide is an implementation of the single meter. As previously described, this circuit uses the single phase energy metering device, the STPM01 with the 8-bit STM8L microcontroller for an entry level meter. An EEPROM and a 3.6 V power supply are also included in the design. This supports the IEC 61036 standard, and the LCD driver is determined by the STM8. The MCU has an RTC with calendar, data, and time built-in; there is no need for an external RTC. The EEPROM is used to data log metering parameters and any tamper event. All battery management is taken care of by the meter as well. A dual EEPROM can be used with RFID capability. An evaluation board is also available supporting low cost electricity meters and appliances.
