Once the information is outside the house, it goes onto the power lines that distribute the information throughout the infrastructure to the utility. The Smart Meter concentrator, outside the house, is a more powerful machine and is a key part of the system because it communicates with multiple meters which can come from either apartment buildings or multiple separate households. In the core functionality shown on this slide, the technology is upgraded from MCUs to full MPUs, microprocessor units, that run a real-time operating system. In addition to the standard power line communication, there are 3G, GSM, and LTE transceivers to get the information to the network. The same power supply and other functions previously discussed apply to the concentrator.
