Smart Grid Solutions: Smart Grid Distribution/Smart Meters Slide 36

This information is extracted, either in analog or digital form for the use of the meter. Looking at the variety of MEMS devices, from the accelerometer to the gyroscope, to the magnetometer plus accelerometer for GEO-modules, to a full iNEMO inertial module embedded with an accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer, it is possible to see several items of information about the meter. One of the most important items for metering applications is the tilt angle and the motion sensing for either anti-tampering or, as in the case of the gas meter, for air bubble and vibration detection to shut down the gas pipeline in order to avoid a potential fire or other malfunction.
