The Si10xx/1x transceivers provide several operating modes which can be used to optimize the power consumption for a given application. Depending upon the system communication protocol, an optimal trade-off between the radio wake time and power consumption can be achieved. For example, consider an application that will sleep for 30S at a time. What modes should be chosen for operating in this application? Because of the fast transition times and low currents this is not always obvious. First consider using the standby mode which gives 800µs to transition to the TX/RX mode and consumes 450nA. The equation for this would appear as (450nA * 30S) + (800µA * 800µS) = 14.14µA/µS. The next consideration is entering the shutdown mode, even though the transition time is considerably longer. The calculation would be (15nA * 30S) + (800µA * 16.8mS) = 13.89 µA/µS. Therefore, for the very long sleep cycle it is actually more advantageous to go to the much lower current provided by the shutdown mode. The table in the slide is provided to allow the user to become more familiar with the different operating modes.
