Write Amplification is a phenomenon that is exhibited in all NAND Flash memory devices. NAND Flash architecture comprises of memory cells grouped together as pages and multiple pages grouped together make up blocks. The intrinsic architecture of NAND Flash allows for reading and programming at a page level, however an erase operation can only be performed at a block level. Wear leveling is required to distribute memory cell wear evenly across NAND blocks and increase usable life.
