When and why would it make sense to use Bluetooth®? First and foremost, Bluetooth allows the user to replace traditional serial cables in order to send data, audio, or voice wirelessly. It is designed to operate a short range, typically 10 m, which is about a room’s length. Consider this range as a personal bubble or Personal Area Network. In some systems, the range can even be as great as up to 100 m. The connections are instant and automatic, but with a high level of security. Bluetooth is well suited to applications that require low power, such as those running from a battery such as a AAA. The technology also has good data rates, in the range of 2 Mbps throughput. Later in the presentation, this will be compared with other wireless technologies.
