There are two Bluetooth®-related technologies that are coming into play and enabling some new exciting applications geared towards low power sensors. Bluetooth Low Energy (or BLE), and ANT technology allow the user to have Bluetooth connectivity in devices that are powered simply from a coin cell or receive power from energy harvesting. The impact of this is that it is possible to create wireless devices able to run for a year or more without needing to recharge. This is especially beneficial for sports, fitness, and healthcare sensors and devices. Both ANT and BLE have a range up to 10 m, or a room’s length. ANT was created and is deployed by Dynastream with applications in millions of sensors. BLE was created by the Bluetooth SIG, based on Bluetooth version 4.0; BLE sensors will be introduced in the later part of 2011.
