As previously mentioned, the Wi-Fi Alliance has taken a subset of the 802.11 amendments and ensured interoperability around them using Wi-Fi product certification. Interoperability was first created for 802.11b-based products which have data rates of up to 11 Mbps and operate at a frequency of 2.4 GHz. 802.11a-based products brought significant improvements in speed at 54 Mbps for devices operating on the 5 GHz band. Wi-Fi 802.11g increased data rates to 54 Mbps for 2.4 GHz products, opening this high data rate to consumer devices. Wi-Fi protected access and Wi-Fi protected access 2, brought proven security to Wi-Fi systems, while Wi-Fi multimedia improved performance for video and audio applications. Wi-Fi protected setup eased the setup of small networks and finally with the release of 802.11n-based products came a higher data rate of 250 Mbps for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz products.
