WiFi Direct is a new standard which is making its way into new products, likely to be released at the end of 2011. Unlike the WLAN infrastructure mode network, WiFi Direct will allow devices to connect directly to each other rather than going through an access point. This will save time transferring data and create greater ease of communication. One device can serve as a group owner and allow multiple devices to connect to it. Wi-Fi Direct devices will also be WPA2 and WPS certified. There is also an existing feature called “Ad Hoc mode” which was originally intended to provide this same peer-to-peer connectivity. However, the implementation of Ad Hoc mode was extremely complex for the user and it was practically never used in the market. Wi-Fi Direct fixes the issues of Ad Hoc mode to allow true peer-to-peer networking.
