Introduction to Wi-Fi Technology Slide 20

A newer implementation of WLAN infrastructure mode network configuration is commonly referred to as a “soft access point”. This allows devices to connect to the internet, without going through a traditional access point. For example, a computer can connect to the internet by first connecting to a cell phone with access to the internet through its 3G modem. Here the cell phone acts as the Access Point, distributing it’s internet access to other nearby stations.
