Introduction to Wi-Fi Technology Slide 14

Lets shift now to focus on the wireless signal that will be sent or received. There are two factors that will affect how far a signal will travel, one is the power of the transmitter and the other is the sensitivity of the receiver. A simple way to look at transmitter power is how loud a person can yell. Here, the higher the better. Transmitter power is represented by positive dBm values. Receiver sensitivity on the other hand can be thought of as how well a person can hear or what is the quietest sound the person can detect. In this case, the lower the better and receiver sensitivity is represented by negative dBm values.
