The first step in getting a device Wi-Fi certified is to become a member of the Wi-Fi Alliance and get the product tested. If the device passes the certification test, it will be allowed to use the Wi-Fi logo. It is also important to note that chips or modules along with software can be pre-certified however the end product that uses them still needs to be certified. Finally, Wi-Fi certified products are also backwards compatible with previous generations, for example any product today can still work with older 802.11b solutions.
