A more robust design is possible using constant current/constant voltage ICs because of the secondary side precise current control and voltage control loops. It is also possible to closely limit output power, because an accurate representation of both the current and voltage is available. The simple equation for Plim = VOUT x ILim is shown on this slide. The presence of current control makes the switch-mode power supply safer in case of accidental short circuit and in overload conditions. The user is no longer depending on inaccurate primary side current sensing, instead they are sensing it at the output, which directly represents the power drawn. The benefit from a better tailored design on the secondary side is that the stress is reduced on the secondary side components such as the output rectifiers, the transformer, the rectifiers, the capacitors as well as the load.
