Target applications for the SEA05L are AC adapters or battery chargers with an LED pilot lamp, and switch mode power supplies with an LED pilot lamp. Beyond the obvious CV/CC circuit implementation, a benefit of the device is the LED pilot lamp power consumption is reduced by 77.5% to meet low standby consumption requirements. This is accomplished by pulse driving the LED, using a 12.5% duty cycle in which the LED is being driven. To the eye, it appears to be constantly lit. By doing this, the circuit is not dropping power across a series resistor from the output of the power supply, constantly dissipating lost power. A reasonably bright output is made by pulse width modulating the output of the LED, an advantage where more stringent power supply requirements mean it is necessary to reduce the no-load power consumption.
