Secondary Side Switch-Mode Power Supply Control Slide 24

Synchronous rectification is used instead of Schottky rectifiers in adapter applications, due to the high current requirements. The improved efficiency due to the lower power lost in Synchronous Rectification makes this a must for the newest requirements. The STSR30 allows for space savings, cost reductions, reliability and performance improvements with respect to the discrete solution. The STSR30 plus a MOSFET can replace the Schottky diode, giving the user higher efficiency and lower power losses. In the case of an adapter, the additional power loss of the output rectification when using a Schottky is heat that must be dissipated. Looking at the graph on this slide the points where output power and voltage favor Synchronous Rectification can be seen and where the Schottky rectifier still can be simple and effective without incurring the extra cost of SR.
