The STMicroelectronics SEA01 allows the customer to trim the device digitally as opposed to using trimmer potentiometers or some other way of adjusting the resistances as required with previous devices. This also eliminates the problem of using fixed resistors and accepting the accuracy based on the tolerance of the resistances being used for the voltage divider. What ST provides is a method of programming using an I2C interface. The device is set up as a slave on the I2C bus and has the typical data and clock pins. It also has a redundant one-time programmable memory that allows the user to trim this device twice if needed. This digital trimming product provides the best application accuracy and online production automated trimming capabilities, which would be very difficult to implement without a dedicated IC. It also uses an industry standard simple and robust I2C communications protocol. In addition the device has redundant OTP memory, there are two memories that can be set to trim it. The SEA01 offers all of this in a cost-effective single IC solution, plus the factory enabled digital trimming improves the user’s production costs because they can trim it automatically online without an operator turning screws on trim pots.
