This slide shows an example of how a Pre-Emphasis device can be used. The 6.25 Gbps signal goes through the Pre-Emphasis device and then across 15 inches of FR4 backplane. Pre-Emphasis devices typically allow the user to set the level of pre-emphasis or boosting to be done in dB. The top left image is using a Pre-emphasis of 0 dB, meaning the device is essentially disabled. The top right image is using -0.23 dB of pre-emphasis. The improvement is minimal. The bottom left image is using -1.19 dB of pre-emphasis. The eye diagram is starting to look nicer. Finally the bottom right image is using -4.59 dB of pre-emphasis. The eye diagram is nice, clean, and wide.
