general term
A foundation for understanding ZigBee® technology includes a knowledge of key terms, some of which are listed on this slide. BeeKit™ is NXP’s development environment that supports design for simple MAC (SMAC), 802.15.4 MAC and ZigBee with NXP’s BeeStack™. BeeKit is available to NXP customers at no charge, provides complimentary access to the SMAC and 802.15.4 MAC, and includes a 90-day evaluation version of BeeStack. BeeStack may be purchased by engineers who wish to use a full ZigBee-compliant solution. 802.15.4 refers to the IEEE PAN (Personal Area Network) standard and is often simply referred to as 15.4. EUI is an abbreviation for Extended Unique Identifier, the IEEE name for what is commonly referred to as the “MAC Address.” For 802.15.4 networks, a 64-bit address is used. OUI is an abbreviation for Organizationally Unique Identifier and is the first 24 bits of the MAC address. Each original equipment manufacturer who wants to produce 802.15.4 hardware must purchase an OUI from the IEEE or purchase a block of addresses from the IEEE. NXP does not provide MAC addresses to its customers.
