802.15.4 offers several valuable communication features including: a simple frame structure, reliable data delivery with CSMA-CA plus message acknowledgement, and association/disassociation tracking of nodes. It also provides key features for network support including the IEEE 64-bit addresses as well as 16-bit short addresses for a network size up to nearly 65,000 nodes. It also supports star, point-to-point, and mesh type networks. The network can be beaconed or non-beaconed. With a beaconed network, an engineer has the option of a super frame structure and guaranteed time slot support.
