There are many solutions that can provide short range wireless capabilities. At the lower data rates and shorter ranges are ZigBee® and Bluetooth®. Although Bluetooth is well-known, it requires routine battery replacement or maintenance. ZigBee, with its power management features, offers the lower power solution which extends battery life, often to the shelf life of the battery. Additionally, ZigBee and 802.15.4 solutions manage power through a low duty cycle, low power-on latency and lower data rates. Transmit power is also adjustable depending on the network environment. Other solutions such as WiMax, WiFi™ and UWB offer higher data rates and/or ranges, but with higher costs and power usage than 802.15.4 solutions. Therefore, 802.15.4 based technologies are ideal for managing system costs for wireless networks that require low power, low data rate and ranges up to 300m. Additionally, the self-forming, self-healing mesh networking capabilities of ZigBee® can provide flexibility not offered by other wireless technologies.
