The ZigBee® technology was defined by the ZigBee Alliance, a consortium of vendors and customers looking for solutions that offer mesh networking and end product interoperability. Based on IEEE 802.15.4, ZigBee offers features that meet the needs of wireless networks for remote monitoring, sensing, and control. These wireless networks typically require infrequent data transmissions and a low data rate. To satisfy this requirement, ZigBee solutions feature a data rate of 250Kbps. ZigBee® can offer low cost and low power solutions for engineers who are looking for a broad deployment of wireless networks from 2 to theoretically 65,000 nodes. ZigBee can support peer to peer, star and mesh networks. The ZigBee Alliance also adds value by providing profiles for interoperability and reduced cost of entry when compared to most wireless standards. For these reasons, ZigBee and 802.15.4 are the ideal alternatives for low data rate, low cost, low power wireless personal area networks (WPAN).
