Because any node can be a master and/or a slave it is now possible to distribute the network topologies outward adding multiple stars around a single hub. This is called a tree and it is the basis of a simple mesh network. Important to note on the diagram on this slide is that the orange hub does not need to connect to the second layer slaves in blue. That alone reduces radio traffic, application stack complexity, power consumption at all nodes and, most importantly, vastly improves the robustness of the network. Care should be taken to not over complicate the data flow. A recommendation of only transferring important data through the first layer of slaves helps reduce channel on time and therefore battery consumption. Decision logic built into the master of each distributed branch allows for results, not information, to be forwarded. Note should also be taken that each node on this system operates on a coin cell battery.
