The Pokit Meter, what is it and who is it for?

This company has intrigued me from the first time I saw it on my social media feeds. Advertising a small handheld multimeter that can fit in your pocket, Pokit was debuting the first-of-its-kind multimeter that used your phone as the display. A fun play on words between pocket and Poke-it, the Pokit meter does exactly that, giving you a powerful multimeter, oscilloscope, and data logger all in one!

Who even needs one of these though? I will go more in-depth on this as this blog continues, but I truly believe that this tool has changed the way that I work with electronics. It is easy to use, fast to connect, convenient to carry, and offers just enough functions that I frequently take it with me over my full-size multimeter. All this is to say that the Pokit Meter is for everyone.

Unboxing and setup

The unboxing and setup process was easy and straightforward. Opening the box from DigiKey, I was met with a clear window in the rectangular box showcasing the Pokit Meter. Available in a variety of colors from clear or white to yellow or black, the handheld multimeter can surely fit whatever design aesthetic you are looking for.

Once open, the packaging is simple, featuring the Pokit device, the spring-loaded grab tips, and even a spare fuse. I took a picture because I was so impressed with the packaging for the fuse. It is perforated around the edge so it can be stored in the carrying case without getting lost!

Under the plastic tray was the instruction manual and the small black carrying pouch. There were little pockets in the case for the device, the spring-loaded leads, and even the spare fuse!

You may be wondering, Will, how is this a multimeter when there are no wires or ports to plug digital multimeter ends into? Well, that is the best part, the Pokit Meter actually has both the red and black cables built in and can be retracted into the housing!

Using the Pokit Meter

I was so surprised with how much I used this little device. I work in product development for vehicles of all shapes and sizes, and frequently I have to measure small voltages or make sure batteries are fully charged. The Pokit Meter can handle up to 60V! Yes, you read that right, you can measure practically any voltage (other than main residential power) with a multimeter you can fit on your keychain. There are three main features of the Pokit that work wonderfully: the oscilloscope, the multimeter, and the data logger.

At my job I use the multimeter ALL THE TIME, pretty much constantly even, to measure everything from signals on the CAN bus to continuity. At home though is where I really get the most use out of it.

Just the other weekend I had a problem, my trailer wiring in my car wasn’t working right because I am a maker, and I insisted on doing it myself rather than having it installed or even buying a proper kit. Before the Pokit meter, I had similar problems, and I had to use my traditional multimeter to measure the voltage at the rear of my vehicle while I sat in the driver's seat. Working alone, I found the only way to get the measurement I needed was to use the min/max feature and check the display when I was done. This is not the case with the Pokit. Since there is no display, the Pokit relies on your phone to be the display wirelessly (I think you see where I am going with this). I was able to use the little spring-grabber leads to connect to my car, then after connecting to the app I was able to watch the values it was reading in real-time while I was sitting in the driver seat. I was even able to try different configurations on my car’s controls to test more features that I would not have been able to do without another person using my traditional meter.

The fun doesn’t stop there though. Since the device connects to a phone app, everything is upgradeable. Sure, there are in-app purchases which can be a drawback for some but think about it like buying a new tool or accessory. Currently they only have one add-on, and it is a range tester that allows you to record when a measurement falls within specific ranges. Buying a dedicated tool would be certainly that expensive at least and you would lose the convenience of the Pokit.

Wrap up

The Pokit meter is the next innovation to come to handheld portable measurement equipment, offering convenience at every step of the process from transporting to using the phone app. The app is easy to use, and the data is responsive and is delivered quickly to the screen in a way that doesn’t hinder most projects. With any new product, there are always concerns about long-term support and longevity, but with this device, it seems like it was built to last.

Overall, I was ecstatic to get a chance to review this product for DigiKey and write a blog post about it. Ever since I saw it on my feed, I knew I would want to get my hands on one, so it was just an incredible opportunity. I will say that the device was provided to me by DigiKey but neither DigiKey nor Pokit sent me any requirements for what I had to say in this write-up. Until next time, my name is Will Siffer, and I hope you learned something today.
