The main focus of this presentation has been portable or point-of-load applications inside the customer’s product. With this, there are typically some key goals and concerns such as small solution size, high efficiency, and integration. Regarding these considerations, the presentation will now discuss some of the devices for power management; PMICs, highly integrated chips, as well as stand-alone linear and DC/DC regulators. One of the main concerns found in applications where data processing is key is the noise sensitivity. This requires diligence to design the complete solution to have a very low noise level, in order to process the data properly. Some of the potential devices which can help the designer achieve this will be discussed as well. Before continuing with the topics mentioned, there are some application design considerations that should be mentioned. Think about what a typical user profile or application profile looks like; will the application run continuously or is it every now and then in sleep mode? Does it run from a battery or does it have a given voltage rail? Questions of this type should be asked first and prioritized so that the focus can be on finding the right products, before getting lost in the huge portfolio which is offered by many of the IC suppliers.
