The final category to be discussed is the high-end ECG medical devices. As previously mentioned, the requirements are critical for these high-end medical devices. Typically these are devices with a large display and capable of doing multiple operations. A graphics processor is required to be able to display ECG waveforms along with all the other information, and an ARM® type processor is used to do the high level system and applications handling. A DSP is also required to conduct diagnostics. Texas Instruments has a great portfolio of processors, the OMAP and Sitara platforms are ideal because they have ARM and DSP graphics integrated into one single chip. These high-end quality medical devices can be customized to be more intelligent, more sophisticated, and also to help customers double up in these devices. Because the processors are very complex to design and most medical customers cannot spend the time and effort to start a design from the ground up, TI is working with third parties to provide product-ready system modules that incorporate the hardware and software required to begin designing the complex processor more easily. There is such a module that is available on the TI website. Information about the medical development kit using OMAP35x process is available at the OMAP3530 processor web link. As can be seen on this slide, TI has integrated a lot of functionality that is required for a high-end ECG medical device into very small system on a module. Additionally, it has Bluetooth, Wifi, USB, and power management integrated, and is available for purchase in small volume to allow the customer to start the FDS certifications more quickly.
