Power electronic converters are mainly used in Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS), Switch Mode Power Supply Systems (SMPS), renewable energy conversion, and motor drives. A UPS is a system designed to protect a load against the instabilities in the power line and ensures the reliability of the load over it’s operating life. SMPS is a DC/DC converter that converts the input DC voltage into an adjusted output DC voltage. Renewable energy conversion includes direct use of DC/AC solar inverters with AC/AC windmills and hydroelectric dams. Motor drives are used to control the speed, torque, acceleration, deceleration and direction of rotation of the motor driving of a machine. These applications all share similar circuit functions such as Filtering, Smoothing, Storage, and Snubbering.
