To achieve dynamic allocation keys for authentication, a separate authentication server is used. This is actually software that resides on a server in the network, and manages the distribution and authentication of wireless devices on the network. This is typically software deployed on Enterprise networks, and is supplied by software running on a network server. RADIUS stands for Remote Authentication Dial In User Service. The original intent of this software has expanded to work with all networking devices. RADIUS is a common authentication protocol utilized by the 802.1x security standard. Although RADIUS was not initially intended to be a wireless security authentication method, it improves the WEP encryption key standard, in conjunction with other security methods such as EAP-PEAP. RADIUS is extensible; most vendors of RADIUS hardware and software implement their own dialects. This server is responsible for authenticating remote users, and now remote devices, on a wireless network.
