The Microchip AT86RF232 RF transceiver is designed using the advanced Microchip CMOS 0.15 µm process technology, which allows operation down to 1.8V. True 1.8V operation ensures that all functions work all the way down to a 1.8V operating voltage. Lowering the operating voltage is one of the most efficient ways to cut power consumption in a design. This means all low-power designs should always run at the lowest possible voltage. True 1.8V operation also allows deeper battery discharge voltage compared to traditional solutions where functions stop working at 2.5 or 2.2V. An internal voltage regulator also prevents high current peaks, enabling the AT86RF232 to operate from coin cells.
