ZigBee RF4CE (RF for Consumer Electronics) defines a new standard for radio frequency (RF) based remote controls. RF4CE is, like ZigBee, based on IEEE 802.15.4 and will replace infrared (IR) based remote controls in the consumer electronics application space. Since they eliminate the line-of-sight barrier found in today's IR remotes, RF remotes are faster, more reliable and provide more freedom to operate devices from greater distances. They also enable advanced features such as two-way communication between the device and the remote, creating a richer experience for consumers. The first public application profile enables innovative two-way interaction and control of home entertainment equipment. Products like HDTV, home theater equipment, set-top boxes and other audio equipment will benefit from the advanced functionality offered by ZigBee RF4CE.
